Training Information
Listed below are details of members of tESA offering training in Shiatsu for horses.
tESA established its standards for Equine Shiatsu practitioner registration in early 2003. The courses listed below have had their final exams/assessments scrutinised and ratified by members of tESA’s committee. These courses will bring students to the required standard for full registration in terms of Shiatsu Theory and Practical skills, and Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology by the end of their period of study.
At present none of the courses detailed below is fully accredited (either by QCA – England or SQA – Scotland), but the committee and individual schools are working on this.
All courses include Shiatsu theory and technique, location of the 14 main meridians (energy pathways) and associated acupoints, Five Element theory, anatomy, physiology & pathology of the horse, equine behaviour, Health & Safety, and practitioner development skills. Most courses also include modules in Human Shiatsu.

Belgische School voor Paardenshiatsu/Ecole Belge de Shiatsu Equin:

No pre-qualification necessary at start, but completion of each level is needed before entry to the next.

Hands on Horses:

Full Practitioner training in three phases over a total 3 year period.
No pre-qualification necessary at start, but completion of each level is needed before entry to the next.

Rosewell Shiatsu Centre:

Full practitioner training in Equine Shiatsu based on the assumption that practitioners are pre-qualified in Human Shiatsu. Class contact hours are not predetermined as each person is individually assessed against competence criteria.

The school runs high quality training including one-day workshops, 3 day foundation courses, full practitioner courses,and post graduate diploma courses. All training and examinations are ratified by tESA and all shiatsu teachers are members of tESA and the Shiatsu Society. We specialise in Shiatsu for Horse and Rider, teaching Zen shiatsu, Traditional Chinese Medicine and 5 element shiatsu. Past and present students are invited to become classroom assistants thus providing the basis of our in-house teacher training programme. We are always pleased to provide many demonstrations to Colleges, Riding Clubs and individual groups. Our philosophy is to bring together a group of like minded individuals of all ages and from all walks of life with one common goal, to enhance their relationship with the horse and one another, with a view to going out into the community and sharing their training and experience with others. |
Scottish School of Shiatsu for Horses:

The Scottish School of Shiatsu for Horses was established in 2001. We now have schools in Scotland, France and Finland. We offer a 2 day introductory course to allow horse owners to find out about equine shiatsu and learn how to help their horse. This is a hands-on course with only a small amount of theory. In Scotland, these are mostly held near Perth but we are willing to come to you if you want to organise your own group. We also run a 2.5 year course to practitioner level. This course has been ratified by tESA and meets the standards required to become a practitioner. This is a part time course, held mostly at weekends and the venues will vary in order to work on different horses, doing different kinds of work. Groups are kept small to ensure that everyone’s needs and problems can be catered for. |
All Principal Teachers of ratified schools are Registered Practitioners with tESA. Some teachers are also qualified in Human Shiatsu.

Introduction to Shiatsu for horse owners. Fortnightly evening classes November 2008 – March 2009 in Dumfriesshire. 1 & 2 day workshops for 5 – 8 people can be arranged throughout Southern Scotland & Northern England. Bespoke 2 day courses inclusive of accommodation for participant & horse (if required) at South Carse, Kirkbean, Dumfries DG2 8BL, participants can bring their own horse and both horse & owner will receive a shiatsu session during their stay. These bespoke courses can be extended to include ridden tuition (dressage or jumping) & beach riding. |
