  • Good health, good circulation
  • Recovers easily after hard exercise

  • Explosive behaviour, restlessness
  • Poor circulation, depressed immune system
  • Prone to boredom – picks up vices
  • Hot tempered, hyperactive, inability to focus
  • Dehydration, easily fatigues
  • Circulatory disorders
  • Headaches, neck and shoulder pain
  • Low resistance to changes in temperature

Earth

Earth horses are typically:
  • Family horse, riding school horse, brood mare
A balanced Earth horse is:
  • Loyal, patient, reliable
  • Safe, likes routine
  • Well grounded, looks after others
  • Good doers, good digestive system, good immune system, and good reproductive system in females
Imbalances in this element can cause:
  • Stubbornness, worry, lethargy
  • Over protective, overreacts to change
  • Selfish, greedy
  • Colic, diarrhoea
  • Weight loss/gain
  • Irregular oestrus
  • Dry mouth, bad breath
  • Sugar sensitive

Metal

Metal horses are typically:
  • Riding club horse – good all rounder
A balanced Metal horse is:
  • Intelligent, safe, hard worker, likes clear boundaries
  • Adapts well to change, interacts well with others
  • Emotionally stable, lacks spontaneity
  • Dependable, likes routine and order
  • Will not be pushed that ‘extra mile’
  • Lean, good coat, soft skin
  • Elegant
Imbalances in this element can cause:
  • Emotionally withdrawn, aloof, can be defensive
  • Harbours grudges – inability to let go
  • Mood swings, prone to boredom
  • Coughing, skin problems, poor coat
  • Difficulty shifting infections
  • Runny nose or eyes

This horse appreciates routine, consistency and does not like to be fussed over

Water

Water horses are typically:
  • Excellent all-rounder at any level in any field it its natural tendency to fear is countered by trust and good communication with rider
A balanced Water horse is:
  • Confident, patient, intelligent
  • Good stamina and excellent health as all systems are well balanced
  • Ability to go with the flow, learns easily
Imbalances in this element can cause:
  • Fear, nervousness, spooking, unpredictable
  • Does not like change, does not want to learn
  • Cold backed, tight hamstrings
  • Inability to go forward OR Exact opposite (tendency to go forward without thought)
  • Prone to arthritic joints/bony abnormalities

Wood

Wood horses are typically:
  • Event horse or show jumper
  • Endurance horse, natural athlete
A balanced Wood horse is:
  • Competitive, determined, sensible
  • Knows exactly what to do and how to do it
  • Good muscle tome, strong joints
  • Recovers well from activity
  • Needs regular work and stimulation
Imbalances in this element can cause:
  • Aggressiveness, irritability, stubbornness
  • Indecision, depression, withdrawn
  • Stiff muscles, tendon problems, hindquarter problems
  • Dry brittle hooves, itchiness
  • Tendency to stumble, typing up
  • Overstraining, both physically and mentally
